Wells, Gregory Irvin born July 1, 1951 in Los Angeles, CA and passed away May 10, 2005 at home after a 2½ year battle with prostate cancer. Beloved husband of Bren for 13 years; loving father of Ashley and Gregory; devoted son of Harry and Lorraine; cherished brother of Armella (Calvin) McAllister, Carol Jefferson and Jacqueline (Curtis) Johnson; nephew of Edwin (Yvonne) Wells and Audrey Irvin and uncle and great uncle to many.
Greg attended St. Patrick’s grammar school in Los Angeles, graduated from Cathedral High School in 1969, and earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Southern California in 1973.
Greg will best be remembered as a dedicated teacher and coach. He began his career at Cathedral High School in 1970, coaching both football and track and teaching mathematics. He left teaching for a few years and drove a cement mixer for Livingston Graham. He returned to teaching and coaching in 1983 when he joined the staff at Serra High School in Gardena. From there he moved on to Loyola High School in 1987 where he finished out his career. During his tenure at Loyola, Greg helped coach 1 CIF football championship and 2 CIF runner-up teams. He amassed a 105 -1 record at the helm of Loyola’s track teams and earned 3 CIF championships and 5 CIF runner-up trophies. During his long career in the classroom and on the athletic fields of southern California, Greg touched the lives of thousands of young men who remember him as mentor and friend.
Vigil service was held at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, May 15 at Loyola High School,
1901 Venice Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90006. The Funeral Mass was at 7:00 p.m.
May 16 at St. Bede Catholic Church, 215 Foothill Blvd., La Canada, CA 91011.
