GAME 5 ---
(Results) After suffering two very emotional losses and coming off their bye week, the Loyola Cub Football team was looking to end a 2 game slide as they took on the Hart Indians. No one was certain how this team would respond since Loyola had not beaten Hart in their last 5 meetings, and Hart looked to be hitting mid-season form, but the Cubs were more than ready to end both streaks and right their ship. It didn't take the Cubs long to show what they were made of. The "Wolfpack D" forced Hart to punt on the opening series and the blitzkrieg began! Loyola scored 21 first quarter points and the "Wolfpack D" smothered the Hart offense in the first half in route to a 38-0 lead at the break. With the back-ups seeing considerable playing time the lead was increased to 52-0 before Hart finally scored 2 meaningless touchdowns against Loyola's reserves for the final margin of victory 52-14. The Cubs dominated every facet of this game.

The offense for the Cubs was paced once again by Junior TB, Anthony Barr, who gained 216 yards on just 12 carries, bringing his season total to 1,008 yards rushing. Barr played just about a quarter and a half and showed why he has quickly established himself as one of, if not THE top RB in the Southern Section. Senior Reed Watne also contributed to the onslaught scoring a touchdown, as did Junior Gavin Meredith and Senior QB Stephen Rokus. All totaled the Cubs amassed 350 yards on the ground and an additional 130 yards through the air. Kicker Mauricio Alfonso went 7 for 7 on PATs and nailed a 30 yard field goal to end the first half.

On the other side to the ball the "Wolfpack D" demonstrated the speed and tenacity that will be needed as the Cubs head into the meat of their season entering league play. Seniors Reed Watne and Luke Napier paced the Wolfpack with 7 tackles a piece, and Junior CB Librado Barocio added 6 tackles along with an interception. Senior Safety Nick Llaca also contributed an interception as the Cubs forced 4 turnovers in the first half of the game. Hart was limited to less than 100 yards in total offense for the first half and did not score until the latter part of the 4th quarter with the outcome already decided.

GAME 4  ---  (Results) A week after their heartbreaking and emotional loss to Concord De LaSalle, the Cubs traveled down to Bellflower to take on the Saint John Bosco Braves in the hope of getting back on track. However, apparently still suffering from the previous week's heartbreak, the Cubs spotted the talented Braves 34 points before Senior QB connected with Junior TB Anthony Barr up the sidelines for his 1st touchdown pass of the season and Loyola's first points of the night. The Cubs trailed 41-7 at the half against a very talented Saint John Bosco team. As the 2nd half was about to begin, the Cubs knew they had dug a very deep hole, and it would be a tall order to escape from it to make this contest competitive. But Coach Kearin's team answered the call! On the opening series of the 2nd half, the Wolfpack awoke and shut down the high powered attack of Saint John Bosco. The opportunistic Cub offense then took the field and marched 65 yards to make the score 41-14. The Wolfpack defense would stuff the potent Brave offense, who were still playing with their starters, twice more and Coach Kearin's offense made the most of the opportunities and heading into the 4th quarter the score was 44-28. The Cubs had seized the momentum and had roared back to make it a game. With a little over 7 minutes left, the Braves faced a 4th & 6, but the Cubs were called for too many men on the field and after the penalty, the Braves converted a 4th and short to keep the ball and run out the clock. The comeback fell a play or two short, but the heart, desire, and passion that the Cubs displayed in the 2nd half has everyone around the program excited about the next 6 weeks and a deep playoff run. Junior TB, Anthony Barr totaled 170 yards on the ground against a defense that was stacked to stop him. The offensive line opened holes and created space for the talented runningback all night, and QB Stephen Rokus stepped up and had his best game of the season completing 15-27 passes for 200 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Wolfpack D held the vaunted and high powered Bosco offense to 3 points in the 2nd half and showed the grit and desire that championships are built on.

GAME 3 ---   (Results) A year removed from a 55-14 nightmare, the Loyola Cubs entered their showdown with Concord De LaSalle looking for redemption, payback, and to show the world that they deserve to be mentioned in discussions of who the best team in the state is. Loyola entered the game 2-0, ranked 17th by the Los Angeles Times, and before an almost sold out crowd at Glendale High, the Cubs controlled the line of scrimmage and stood toe to toe with the #1 ranked team in the state and #2 team in the country. On the opening series of the game the Wolfpack Defense stopped the vaunted De LaSalle attack and held them to a "three & out," showing that they had indeed come to play. The Loyola offense took over and immediately showed why the Cubs are a contender for a Pac-5 crown this season. Junior TB Anthony Barr took a hand-off and raced up the right sideline 35 yards for an early 7-0 lead. A little later in the first half, after a blocked punt, the Spartans took control of the ball inside the Cub 5 yard line. After getting down inside the 1 on the first play, the Wolfpack Defense stirred up the echoes of the 'BERLIN WALL,' denying the Spartans on three straight plays and holding them to zero points and regaining momentum. The Spartans continued to test the Cubs all night, and at every turn, the Cubs answered each and every call with a shot of their own. As the game entered the latter stages of the 4th quarter, the Cub offense was very much in control of the game as they marched up field but fate was not smiling on Loyola this night. Call it a freak play, lucky bounce, or whatever; but as the Cubs lined up for a field goal to go up by 4, the ball fluttered short of its destination, and the very opportunistic Spartans raced 75 yards with the ball to set up their game winning touchdown. The Cubs lost 27-21, but everyone in attendance knows THE CUBS ARE BACK!  With the majority of the Southern Section powers in attendance; Long Beach Poly, Mater Dei, Crespi, Notre Dame and Corona Centennial among others, the Cubs showed that they are indeed back and will contend for the Pac-5 crown in 2008. The Loyola Offense was once again led by TB Anthony Barr, who rushed for over 200 yards again and scored 3 touchdowns. The offensive line dominated the line of scrimmage all night and created huge holes, led by Senior tackle Andrew Curtis and Juniors Colin Tanigawa and Jordan Hanson. Defensively, the Wolfpack was lead by Junior LB Bronson Green who led the way with 12 tackles, 6 of which were solo. 5 other Cubs had 6 tackles a piece, as the Defense swarmed across the field all night. GAME 2 ---   (Results) The Cubs entered the 2nd game of the season looking to improve on their 1-0 record and number 18 ranking in the Los Angeles Times. They accomplished both! The PALOS VERDES SEA KINGS came into Glendale Saturday night with lofty expectations, and they were left wondering if they'd ever awaken from the nightmare. Coach Kearin's team put up 34 points on the shell-shocked Sea Kings and were once again paced by the Wolfpack "D," who tallied their first shutout of the season, while the offense was led by Junior TB Anthony Barr.  The 6'4, 220 pound junior TB rushed for 185 yards and 3 touchdowns in leading the Cubs on offense and showed why he is quickly establishing himself as one of the premiere runningbacks in the Southern Section. SENIOR TB/CB Justyn Williams also added a touchdown for the Cubs as the offensive line dominated the line of scrimmage, led by Senior Andrew Curtis, 6'2 255 and Junior Colin Tanigawa, 6'3, 270 pounds.  Defensively, the Wolfpack continued to display a speed and tenacity that is the hallmark of great teams. The Wolfpack had 4 sacks and caused 5 turnovers, which were converted into 17 points by the Loyola offense. The Sea Kings were held to 128 total yards on the night, and the Wolfpack limited the Sea Kings to 9 TOTAL YARDS in the 2nd half. Junior LB Bronson Green led the team with 9 tackles, 6 of which were unassisted. Senior DE Hunter Simmons was also recognized for his play forcing and recovering a fumble and contributing a sack. The Defense also intercepted 2 passes for the 2nd game in a row.

GAME 1 --- (Results) Last week the Cubs traveled down to Manhattan Beach to take on Mira Costa High School. After some early jitters the Loyola Cubs settled in and played good, old-fashion, hard-nosed football, pulling out a 23-7 victory over the Mustangs. The Loyola offense was lead by JUNIOR TB Anthony Barr, who rushed for over 200 yards and had 2 touchdowns. Kicker Mauricio Alfonso added a field goal and 2 PATs to the Cub effort. Defensively the Cubs allowed just over 120 yards in total offense and limited the Mustangs to 16 NET YARDS in the second half. The Wolfpack was led by Senior Safety, Nick Llaca, who led the team with 10 tackles and added an interception. Senior Quick End, Brett Ackerman also contributed, with a key interception, in the 3rd quarter, returning it for a momentum changing touchdown and helping the Cubs seal the Victory. On Saturday, September 13, 2008, '07 CIF Western Division Quarterfinalist, Palos Verdes High School will travel to Glendale High to take on the Cubs. Palos Verdes scrimmaged Narbonne High last week, and they appear ready and more than able to repeat their own playoff run this season.  Coach Kearin will look to have the Cubs firing on all cylinders this weekend as the Cubs look to improve their record to 2-0. 1990 CIF PLAYER OF THE YEAR, Drew Casani has returned to call the defense, as the Wolfpack will look to continue to dominate their side of the ball. Kickoff is set for 7:00 PM on Saturday night. The Cubs will need your support as they look to build momentum heading into their match-up with CONCORD DE LASALLE on September 20th.
